A year(ish) in Tenerife...

Into the unknown
Redundancy at the end of August loomed. What to do next? Don, a colleague of mine who, unfortunately was to join me in the unemployment queue had been prompting me to visit Tenerife for years. Why not, another job at my time of life was a remote possibility, I owed nothing to anyone?  I commenced browsing the internet during July 2011 discovering a substantial drop in the price of a ticket to Tenerife South airport on Monday 1st November of that year. Easyjet would transport me, a cabin bag and my suitcase from Gatwick for the princely sum of £60.00. I booked.

The view from the bedroom
Having a flight I was now committed. 'Long stay accommodation in Tenerife' went into Google's search engine. At the top of the list, if I remember correctly, 'Los Abrigos Properties' owned, at that time, by David Thorley ably assisted by Laura Dion. A particular photograph caught my eye, the living room window overlooked the sea. At 350 € per month including 40 € towards utilities for a one bedroom apartment, ideal.  An Internet Bank transfer secured the deal.

How can you just go? What if you don't like it? Where will you live when you come back? Undaunted my brother drove me, along with his family to Gatwick sending me off in style. Well he would have done if we hadn't run out of fuel about five miles from the airport. A call to the AA, a frantic wait, a dash to departures, a hasty goodbye to my niece and nephew, a hug from his wife, help through to departures from my brother and I was off.  Hopefully this was not to be a bad omen?  See for yourself 18 months and many, many bus journeys to come.  Read about my adventures and linked photo albums on
